7” TEST PRESSING LAYOLA L 17-216

Test pressing for the «self titled» first single of the Sevens, with a handwritten note by Michel Bovay on the label. At the beginning of their professional career, the band had been signed by the Swiss label Layola (operated by John Lay Electronics in Lucerne).

7” SEVEN / IN GOD I TRUST

The Sevens' first single was recorded on the stage of the Landgasthaus Riehen in early August 1965. The sound engineer was Pit Linder, who had installed a studio there.

7” TEST PRESSING LAYOLA L 17-217

Both songs on this disc were recorded on the same day as L 17-216, the playbacks were played live. All four songs of the first two singles were also on the album, in contrast to the singles even in stereo. Apparently this single was released after L 17-216 (see the Layola Flyers below).

7” BE MY LOVING BABY / THE LOVE OF A BIRD

This coupling was probably the most successful 7” record of the Sevens. The Sevens were the best selling beat band on Layola. But the big commercial success was reserved for the Swiss folklore productions, which targeted the international tourist audience in Switzerland.

12” UNRELEASED ALBUM TEST PRESSING LAYOLA 30-311

Be My Loving Baby / You Should Know / It’s All Over Tonight (unreleased) / Pretty Little Angel /  The Love Of A Bird / I’m Crying (Different vocal take) / Why Don’t You Love A Man Like Me (Different version) / In God I Trust / I Can’t Understand (unreleased) / Beggin’ Me To Stay (unreleased) / Seven / Talk About Her

The only album of the Sevens is a worldwide sought-after rarity, but the unreleased test pressing of the album, which remains unreleased, is the "Holy Grail"! It contains a completely different song order, three unreleased songs (which were only made available almost 40 years later) and two completely different takes. Four songs of the published album are missing here. It can be assumed that this album version was recorded during the first sessions of the band at the Landgasthof Riehen in the summer of 1965, and afterwards the first test pressing was made. This test pressing is wilder, but also a bit bumpier than the "official" version, released a few months later. Some of the versions are quite crazy, especially the vocals - for example the first version of the Animals’ "I'm Crying", which is immortalised here. Only three copies of this test pressing are known!

Instead of the Sevens’ first album Layola LP 30-311 was finally published in form of the compilation album "The Beat Bomb", released at the beginning of 1966.

7” LAYOLA L17-220 BALLA BALLA / JUJU HAND

Rather unwillingly, The Sevens recorded a version of the German bubblegum beat hit  «Balla Balla» at the order of their producers. The B-side was also quite lightweight with Sam The Sham's «Juju Hand». Hence the band insisted that the record would be released under their old name of Les Pirates. On first pressing, the The Sevens’ band name was hardly recognizable on the cover, an on the label Les Pirates were listed as performers.

7” ORCHESTROLA PRESSING

The Orchestrola label was also run by John Lay. Some Layola releases also appeared on Orchestrola. One of them is «Balla Balla», here coming in an autographed Layola cover and the Les Pirates name on the label. But there are also Orchestrola pressings with The Sevens name on the label and covers on which the name The Sevens is also clearly legible.

7” TEST PRESSING ELITE SPECIAL F 4035

An export release on the Elite Special label (f 4035). This is the rare test pressing. The Sevens’ version of «Balla Balla» was released almost at the same time as the original of the Rainbows. With «Juju Hand» it even had the same B-side as the – much more successful - Rainbows record.

7” BALLA BALLA ELITE SPECIAL

On the Elite Special pressing the Sevens were “outed”: Their name was featured on the cover as well as on the labels.

7” UNRELEASED TEST PRESSING LAYOLA 17-221

Unveröffentlichte Testpressung der «Little Girl I Know»/ «My Mother» Single.
Matrix-Nummer: 17-221 A/B.

7” LITTLE GIRL I KNOW / MY MOTHER

Signiertes Exemplar.

Signed copy. On the A-side you can hear organ player Muggi Hungerbühler as the lead singer. He had already played the song «Little Girl I Know» during his short stay with the Dynamites. There is also a studio recording of this song by the Dynamites on a Layola test pressing. Since the band was signed by Jecklin/Columbia, this remained unreleased.

7” ELITE SPECIAL PRESSING

The Sevens owed their record deal originally to an audition for this classic Swiss Beat sampler that was planned by Layola to cash in with the big Beat boom of 1965. They made such a good impression that they were also allowed to record a number of their own records for Layola. But their planned album was postponed. So the matrix number originally reserved for the Sevens LP was then used for the Beat compilation, now called «The Beat Bomb». The album of the dance combo The Top Cats was released in early 1966 under the order/matrix number 30-319.

12” VARIOUS ARTISTS: THE BEAT BOMB

Layola 30-311

Neben dem Album «Swiss Beat Live!» diejenige Compilation, die den Boom der Schweizer Beat Bands Mitte der 1960er-Jahre perfekt dokumentiert. Dass The Sevens für Layola das Zugpferd waren, zeigt sich auch darin, dass sie als einzige Band mit vier Titeln vertreten sind: «Little Girl I Know», «Balla Balla», My Mother» und «Ju Ju Hand». Ausserdem dabei: Mike & The Hounds (eine englische Band), The Sheapes und The Red Devils aus Basel, The Mods aus Winterthur und The Savages aus Zürich. «The Beat Bomb» wurde Anfang 1966 veröffentlicht.

Besides «Swiss Beat Live! » this is the perfect Swiss Beat compilation. The fact that The Sevens were the driving force for Layola can also be seen in the fact that they are the only band with four titles: «Little Girl O Know», «Balla Balla», «My Mother» and «Ju Ju Hand». Also present: Mike & The Hounds (an English band), The Sheapes and The Red Devils from Basel, The Mods from Winterthur and The Savages from Zurich. «The Beat Bomb» was released in early 1966.
With their version of «Balla Balla» the Sevens were also present on two other contemporary compilations, but these can be ignored without hesitation!

7” TEST PRESSING LAYOLA L 17-230

Test pressing of the fifth Sevens Single. This single was released in spring 1966 at the same time as the Sevens album, but in contrast to this one it was released in mono.

7” DON’T YOU FRET / PANAM

It was not only the full colour cover of this Sevens record that caused quite a stir. The music wasn’t bad either: The Sevens’ cover of the Kinks song «Don’t You Fret» was great and the B-side featured the rather wild garage instrumental «Panam» with a nod to The Animals and Them.

12" TESTPRESSING LAYOLA LY 70’001

LAYOLA LY 70’001

The first and only Sevens longplayer was released in March/April 1966 and came in an unglued foldout cover. Together with the debut album of Les Sauterelles (1966) this is the definitive Swiss Beat statement on 33 tours. 10 songs were self written, they were accompanied by a cover version of The Animals and The Kinks each. Today the Sevens album is considered one of the European garage beat classics. It has been released several times, as bootleg or authorised vinyl LP. The band itself released it in 2005 with some bonus tracks on CD.

7” TEST PRESSING LAYOLA L 17-231

Testpressung der letzten Sevens Single «I’m Not The Right», die im September 1966 veröffentlicht wurde.

7” I’M NOT THE RIGHT / RUN ME DOWN
