NOTHING TO DECLARE?
Vom 25. Januar bis zum 7. Februar 1965 verbringt John Lennon Winterferien in St. Moritz. Das Medieninteresse ist gross. Doch die Ankunft am Flughafen Zürich wird nur von Eric Bachmann (1940 – 2019) dokumentiert, der sich bald einen Namen als einer der besten Presse- und Reportagefotografen machen wird. Da John Lennon in Kloten von einem übereifrigen Zöllner aufgehalten wird, kann Bachmann seine Bilder an die deutsche Teenagerzeitschrift «OK» verkaufen.
John Lennon comes to Switzerland on January 25th 1965 to spend a two week holiday in St. Moritz in the Alps, where he learns to ski for the first time. Media interest is significant, but when the Beatle arrives at Zurich airport, only one photographer is present, a young man named Eric Bachmann, wo is to become one of Switzerland’s best press photographers. As Lennon is stopped by a customs officer for two not declared bottles of Whiskey in his luggage, he has a story, which promptly is published by German Teen mag «OK».

MEET THE FIVE DORADOS

Als Nachtmensch sichtet man John ab und zu im hoteleigenen Dancing, wo gerade die Luzerner Tanz- und Beatcombo The 5 Dorados engagiert ist. Die hat auch Beatles-Songs im Repertoire. Lennon ist erfreut. «Wonderful!», soll er der Band zugerufen haben. Später posiert man gemeinsam fürs Album. Angeblich will George Martin die Dorados nach England holen, so wird das jedenfalls von einigen Schweizer Zeitungen kolportiert. Doch die «Beatles-Karriere» der Five Dorados scheitert an fehlenden Arbeitsgenehmigungen.
At night, John is spotted dancing at the hotel’s own nightclub, were the 5 Dorados from Lucerne are playing. Lennon likes, what he hears, especially when the beat and dance combo plays Beatles songs. «Wonderful!» is his comment. Later, he poses with the Swiss band. Some Swiss newspapers report, that «manager» George Martin wants to bring the Dorados to England. But as they do not get work permits, these plans are cancelled.

Da sich John in St. Moritz ohne Bodyguards bewegt, wird er immer wieder angesprochen. Er verteilt grosszügig Autogramme. So zum Beispiel an eine Touristin aus Deutschland, die das Autogramm auf der St. Moritz Postkarte an ihren Sohn und Beatles Fan in Neuss am Rhein verschickt.
As John spends his holidays without bodyguards, he is often approached by fans, hotel guests and other people. He happily obliges to give autographs. This large St. Moritz postcard is signed to a German tourist, who then sends it to her son and Beatles fan in Neuss at the Rhine river.

«DEAR CYNTHIA»
Eine amerIkanische Radio-JournaIistin verschickt ein weiteres Lennon-Autogramm auf der Rückseite einer Bar-Karte an eine junge Verwandte in Kanada. Sie berichtet, dass sie im Zimmer neben Lennon genächtigt habe. John erledigt auch Fanpost, die ihn im Palace Hotel erreicht und versendet Autogramme und Geburtstagswünsche.
An ABC-journalist sends this Lennon autograph on the back of a hotel bar menu to a family member in Canada. She reports, that she had the room next to John’s in the Palace hotel. John is also responding to fan mail that reaches him in the hotel and sends autographs and birthday wishes.

Im April 1969 sind John Lennon und Yoko Ono für ein paar Tage in Montreux, wo sie am Fernseh-Festival Rose D’Or teilnehmen. Dort wird ihr Film «Rape» gezeigt und an einer Pressekonferenz diskutiert.
