Im März 1966 machten Paul McCartney und seine Verlobte Jane Asher zwei Wochen Skiferien in Klosters. Offenbar verbrachten sie auch eine Nacht in Rheinfelden wie dieser lesenswerte Durchschlag einer Hotelanmeldung belegt.

Ich war bei «Help» ein bisschen Ski gelaufen und hatte Spass daran, deshalb bin in die Berge, und am Ende hockte ich in einem Schweizer Chalet in einem kleinen Bad und schrieb <For No One». Ich erinnere mich an die abfallende Bassfolge, auf der das Stück basiert und an die Figur in dem Lied – ein Mädchen, das vor dem Spiegel steht und sich schminkt.»

In March 1966 Paul McCartney and his fiancée Jane Asher spent a two week skiing holiday in Klosters. They also made a stop in Rheinfelden, as these rather spectactular hotel forms proof!

Im Sommer 1972 kam Paul McCartney mit seiner neuen Band Wings nach Europa. Die Band promotete auf ihrer «Wings Over Europe Tour» die kürzlich erschienenen Singles «Give Ireland Back To The Irish» und «Mary Had A Little Lamb». Geplant war auch ein Live Album, das allerdings nicht erschien. Die Band samt McCartneys Familie, Crew und Hündin Martha (remember «Martha My Dear») war in einem bunt bemalten Doppeldeckerbus unterwegs (remember «Magical Mystery Tour») und hielt an 25 Stationen. In Zürich spielten Wings im Kongresshaus. Es war das erste Konzert eines Beatle in der Schweiz.
The «Wings Over Europe» tour was intended to promote recent singles «Give Ireland Back To The Irish» and «Mary Had A Little Lamb». There was also discussing of a live record by Paul’s new band, but this did not materialize at the time. The band, with the McCartney children, road crew and dog Martha (remember «Martha My Dear») toured the continent in a brightly coloured double decker bus (remember «Magical Mystery Tour») and made stops at 25 locations. Their concert at the Kongresshaus Zurich was the first live performance of a Beatle in Switzerland.

Statt seines aus Beatles-Zeiten bekannten Höfner-Violin-Basses spielte Paul nun konsequent auf einem Rickenbacker Bass, der auf den Schweizer Gitarrenpionier Adolph Rickenbacher (1887–1976) zurückgeht.
Instead of his Beatles Live Days Höfner Violin Bass, Paul now played a Rickenbacker Bass. The Rickenbacker guitar company was founded by Swiss born Adolph Rickenbacher (1887 – 1976).

Mit den Wings spielte Paul keine psychedelischen Beatles-Songs, dafür seine Solosongs in einem eher unspektakulären Blues Rock Stil. Immerhin gab es mit «Long Tall Sally» ein Little Richard Cover, das schon die Beatles bekannt gemacht hatten.

There were no Beatles tunes in the Wings Live Set. Instead of psychedelic pop Wings concentrated on Paul’s solo songs and played them in a rather unspectacular Blues Rock style. However with «Long Tall Sally» the band had one well known tune back from the Beatles live days in their set, written, of course, by Richard Penniman aka Little Richard.

Heute kaum zu glauben: Das (Zusatz?) Konzert von Wings im Pavillon Montreux konnte man für 20 Franken sehen und die Verschiebung des Konzertbeginns wurde auf einem handgeschriebenen Flyer kommuniziert.

HALLENSTADION 1989
Am 29. und 30. Oktober 1989 kehrte Paul McCartney unter eigenem Namen und mit einer neuen Band nach Zürich zurück. Diesmal zelebrierte er die Legende der Beatles schon ausgiebig und hatte zahlreiche Beatles Songs in seinem Repertoire. Filmaufnahmen von den Zürcher Konzerten wurden für den Videoclip zum Song «Figure Of Eight» (aus dem Album «Flowers in The Dirt») und Richard Lesters Tourfilm «Get Back» verwendet. Die Konzerte der «World Tour» waren für McCartney nach eher schwierigen Jahren der Start zu einem veritablen Comeback als Solokünstler.
On October 29 and 30th 1989 Paul McCartney played two shows at the Hallenstadion Zurich, under his own name and with a new band. This time he celebrated the Beatles legacy and played quite a few Beatles classics. Both Zurich shows were filmed and excerpts can be seen in the videoclip for «Figure Of Eight» (from the «Flowers in The Dirt» album) and Richard Lester’s tour documentary «Get Back». After some hard years this was the start of McCartney’s successful comeback as a solo artist.

Ein riesiges (117,5 X 170 cm) Lichttfasssäulenposter für Paul McCartneys einziges Schweizer Stadionkonzert am 2. Juni 2004 im Letzigrund in Zürich, im Rahmen der 12 Europagigs umfassenden «04 Summer Tour». Paul hatte erneut eine neue Liveband dabei, die ihn seither an allen seinen Gigs begleitet. 30 000 Fans standen im strömenden Regen. Sie wurden immerhin mit einer Weltpremiere belohnt. Der Song «Follow Me» hatte hier seine Uraufführung – auf Tonträger wurde er 2005 auf dem Album «Chaos And Creation In The Backyard» veröffentlicht.

Ringo Starr und die damalige Inkarnation seiner All Starr Band (Zak Starkey, Nils Lofgren, Todd Rundgren, Dave Edmunds, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, Burton Cummings) spielten am 13. Juli 1992 ein Konzert am Montreux Jazz Festival. Party Time!

RINGO IN ZOFINGEN 1998

Am «Heitere Open Air» in Zofingen kam es 1998 zu einem zweiten Auftritt von Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. Diesmal im Line-up: Simon Kirke, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker, Mark Rivera. Nicht ganz so gut wie in Montreux. An diesem Gig spielte Sam mit der Berner Band Span quasi als Supporting Act für Ringo. Leider kam kein Treffen zustande.
Ringo’s second Swiss gig took place at the Heitere Open Air in Zofingen, summer 1998. The line-up featured Simon Kirke, Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker, Mark Rivera, but there was less fun than in Montreux. Sam was part of an opening act for Ringo, playing drums for Bernese Rock Band Span, who opened the festival day. Unfortunately, there was no personal meeting with Ringo.
